February

For all of us that love to grow our plants from seeds February comes to us almost too quickly! We must get started right away! Perennials make me want to get an early start, so that I will ensure to have robust, healthy plants that are eager to be transplanted to my garden the late part of May or early June. February is also the month that I like to start with my annuals as well. With all this preparation going on in my garden, it reminds me of the upcoming joy spring has to offer and takes my mind off the winter that I am living in, great times ahead!

Towards the end of February you can search your storage room and revive those poor Geraniums (Pelargonium) and bring them out of hibernation, again check for any rot! Within a few weeks they will jump to life vigorously and produce a healthy and strong growing root system. Make certain that your plants are very well lit up and have been watered well in a fertile potting soil. You may want to use many of the new shoots for cuttings, to increase the number of your plants or you may just want to replace the weaker ones with these stronger ones. If for some reason you have Geraniums that have been stored over many winters and they do not regain their original vitality, which often occurs, you may use cutting from the resulting plants and they will be certainly as good as the original parents.

Also to note that if you are a very active gardener like me for example you would have kept your Geraniums under lights or in a window during the winter months. These plants will be able to provide you with healthy cuttings towards the end of February!
