May

WOW! May is here, winter is almost gone!!

I would suggest you continue to do your indoor planting. It is the time, however, that most gardeners see the rush to buy vegetable seedlings! If you are eager and optimistic you may plant them early, if you are not then you may plant them a little later and wait until June!

You may want to make a list and complete this following schedule.

It is a great time to harden off indoor-started plants.

Remove any winter mulch gradually and remove any protective mounds and screens.

Seed your annuals from the indoors to the outdoors now.

Later in the month, seed another, second batch of healthy vegetables.

About two weeks before you anticipate the last frost, plant Gladiolas and Dahlias. Hopefully by the time they grow out from the soil the danger from frost will be gone.

Get your herbaceous perennials, lift them and divide them.

Finalize your lawn clean-up, mow your lawn and fertilize what needs to be done.

After the frost has finished

Plant the healthy vegetable seedlings and annual bedding plants. I am a cautious gardener, so I leave my annuals until the end of the month.

You should watch your perennials for weeds and then dig the entire weed out including the roots.

After the first rapid growth from spring, clip your hedges.

Do a quick inspection of your shrubs and trees for sucker sprouts and trim them back.
