It is October already and we still have things to do in our gardens!
You should by now, be completing the planting of all your bulbs. Daffodils, tulips and gladiolas corms should all be dug up by now. You may want to protect any roses you have by covering them with a blanket to protect them from winter. Strawberry plants will also benefit from cover as well, again with a blanket or even straw, this work well.
Now perennials can be cut back, your flower beds, borders and vegetable garden can all be dug over. Remember to use all of those falling leaves for your compost, so you may have lots of raking to do! After the leaves have fallen you may prune your deciduous trees and shrubs. Lastly, remove those nagging and tough weeds!
If your weather is somewhat warm and the soil appears dry you should water your woody deciduous and coniferous plants. Remember too that the weather may get to freezing levels and it is the time to disconnect your hoses from the outside taps to prevent your pipes from freezing!
It is also a great time of year to consider thinking about your friends and family's gardening needs for Christmas gifts! Stop by or visit Diana's Garden Centre and we will help you with all of your wonderful ideas!
