Planning a Garden

Hello my friend, certainly the first step to creating your ultimate garden is to make a paper drawn plan. It is a great idea to have a sit down and contemplate what type of design you would like your garden to be, straight lines, curves, a bundle of casual flowers or a more formal look.

Designing your ideal type of garden ahead of time will allow you to avoid making mistakes by seeing what you have on paper and then working out the kinks to prevent any necessary re-work halfway through your project. Your house may also be a great starting place to help you create your ideal design. Traditional homes are much nicer looking with symmetrical, formal landscape designs, while a country-style house with lovely trim would look more romantic surrounded by a beautiful kaleidoscope of flowers. Perhaps you have a contemporary style home that would look most beautiful with a Japanese style garden design or many bold plants in beautiful large groups.

The number one reason that plants fail to grow is that they have been planted in the wrong place. Plants are very unique in their make-up and are very individual. So it is not surprising to find that some plants love the sun and the dry conditions it brings while other plants like damp and shady conditions to thrive in. If you understand the uniqueness of your garden and do a quick soil and climatic analysis, you will easily be able to determine the types of plants that will thrive in your garden.

A great idea to think about when making your garden is to determine when the best time for you to make one is. For example if you are away on vacations in mid summer you may want to create a low maintenance garden that is full of beautiful colors of spring bulbs, early perennials and flowering shrubs. You may garden plan for another peak in late summer, planting a few trees and shrubs will give you some fall color as well! If your rest time to enjoy your garden is after work, in the evening, you may want to plan to have plants that have evening scents to them and garden lighting is also so enjoyable and peaceful!

When making a garden you may want to consider planting your perennials close to hedges or fences so that they make a nice back drop. You should also consider making your flower beds about three rows deep, again with your perennials at the back a good row size is six to ten feet wide, this will allow you to fill your garden up with wonderful plants and it will certainly create a beautiful more colorful and spectacular look.

A last thought is that you may want to set aside a budget of how much you would be able to spend on your garden. This will also help you to determine the amount of time you are able to commit to developing and maintaining your lovely garden.
